An Excursion into Local Tamil Culture

Balu, Mohanam Cultural Centre

Course Description
Come and join in a half-day adventure into the local life of the Tamil village of Sanjeevi Nagar and Allankuppam. During the course of our travels we will visit the Mohanam Cultural Centre, various local craft workshops, experience a puja at the local temple, and end up at Thoppu Veedu, a learning garden situated in the middle of a beautiful coconut grove. Here you will have the opportunity to participate in various activities ranging from Kolam, traditional floor drawing, drumming, and folk dance to the delights of South Indian cooking. We will close the afternoon by enjoying a traditional Tamil meal together cooked over a wood fire.

Participants will gather at Lively Boutique at 9:15am. At 9:30 we will depart for the local village. We will be touring the village by bullock cart so please bring sun protection if you need it.

Venue
Meet at Lively (next to Ganesh Bakery) at 9:15 am. You will use your own transportation to get from Lively to village (2.5 km). If you do not have transportation, come as you are and we'll get you to the village.

Presenter's Bio
With one eye on the effects of materialism and globalization Balu has exercised his passion for community spirit through the group dynamic. He was a member of the original Mohanam team from 2001 focusing on keeping alive the most stimulating aspects of the local culture. In developing numerous valuable local projects through the principle of "learn and teach" the next youth were inspired into action. Balu's enthusiasm the new youth in aspects of culture, extensive environmental issues, and developing worthwhile work remains high in his current activities and future vision.
